Jim Smith:  Reflections on Earth Day

The April 17th, 2011 Spirit of Earth Day consisted of family activities, workshops, Glover Wagner’s “An Environmental Vision” keynote address, performing arts and information tables. And, we heard the history of Earth Day from Jim Smith, one of the organizers of the first Earth Day. Thanks to volunteers Kristin Wimberg, Randy Wimberg, David Madison and Jim Bergman, we recorded the workshops, keynote and closing ceremony. The first of the ten videos is Jim Smith: Reflections on Earth Day. Mr. Smith passed away a couple weeks after this presentation and we were honored to have him lend some of his precious time recollecting how the first Earth Day came to be.

Many Heavens, One Earth

Betsy Quammen interviewed fourteen religious leaders from around the world at a celebration called Many Heavens, One Earth, put on by the Alliance of Religions & Conservation and the UNDP.  The Tributary Fund with Wimberg Productions had exclusive film rights.  This short selection of interviews is just a taste of the power behind faith and the environment!  Ideally, this film will grow into a longer inspirational piece that explores actual on-the-ground projects lead by people of faith around the world.

Buddha and the Big Fish

What could a conservation organization, a group of Buddhist monks and a really big fish all have in common? They come together in a small part of Mongolia known as The Eg-Uur Watershed Area where some amazing things are happening. The Tributary Fund, an organization that protects ecosystems around the world by combining conservation and culture, started a project in 2004 with the Eg-Uur Buddhist monks to both rebuild their monastery, which was destroyed over seventy years ago, and to help the community find ways of protecting their waterways and the endangered Taimen – the largest species of salmon in the world. All this is achieved by finding a common ground between the teachings of Buddhism and environmentally sound conservation practices. Join Filmmaker Ian Kellett as he tells us the story of “Buddha and the Big Fish.”

Peter Matthiessen

Betsy Quammen interviewed author and conservationist, Peter Matthiessen in this 5 part Conservation Dialogues series on faith and the environment.

Jane Goodall

To Children on the Environment

Betsy Quammen interviewed Goodall in April 2008, following her lecture in Bozeman, Montana. Understanding the power of children in the conservation movement, Goodall speaks directly to youth.

Faith and Conservation

Betsy Quammen interviewed Jane Goodall following Goodall’s TTF sponsored lecture in Bozeman, Montana, in April 2008. This interview has spawned a series of interviews with scientists, conservationists and religious leaders – including Iian Douglas Hamilton, Peter Matthiessen and fourteen faith leaders representing seven major international faiths. The interviews and conversations will continue and will include the Dalai Lama in the coming year. See www.thetributaryfund.org for more information.
