MONGOLIA

TTFThe Eg-Uur project in Mongolia is our first and largest project. In 2002, we were asked by Sweetwater Travel to help build partnerships and engage the communities in fisheries conservation practices along the Eg and Uur Rivers. We began by addressing community needs, and now provide free medical care, school supplies and materials, funding for festivals and community gatherings, micro-loan opportunities, student scholarships, community field trips to gold mining sites, and training on water quality monitoring in nine communities along the Eg and Uur Rivers. We also rebuilt the Dayan Derkh Monastery, which serves as a free children's environmental education summer camp and center for conservation training for community members and monks.

By teaming with fisheries biologists, fly-fishing guides, and Mongolian NGOs, we have built a network of community-managed resource co-operatives that protect 300 miles of river, supporting a sustainable population of taimen.

We are now gearing up to replicate this effort in new sites in Mongolia: the Onon River, the Upper Uur, Three Rivers, and the Tsataan region along the northern reaches of Lake Hovsgol.

TTF is launching the TTF Opportunity Grants Program, a way to help monks create and lead conservation programs in their local community.
